Feb 22, 0 0 PA. Why aren't there any small-caliber tungsten core bullets on the market? I know there's the armor-piercing restrictions, but that doesn't preclude frangible tungsten powders or cores that aren't shaped for penetration. The closest I've seen are: 1. Powder cores containing tungsten. But I tested the density on ExtremeShock's heaviest. In contrast pure lead is If you replaced an SMK with a core containing significant tungsten we'd be talking about gr.Discussion in ' Firearms ' started by homeshowSep 21, Log in or Sign up.

Broken link removed - melbo. Last edited by a moderator: Feb 27, Bullets have a steel core While the 5. The M is the standard issue round for the M16A2-M4 rifle since the mid '80's. I never fired my M4 in retaliation while deployed so I cannot vouch for the officail claims.
What I can say about this round is that if the steel core is off center of the entire projectile, then it will "key hole" upon leaving the muzzle. Now this may not bode well for accuracy, but termimal ballistics can be quite devastating on soft targets. I also would say that the price is resonable due to the fact that Ammunitiontogo was able to procure such a new lot of anything out of Lake City.
You could also reload the same thing for a lot cheaper, M milsurp projectiles are widely available. RouteClearanceSep 21, The M was developed as a light armor piercing round. It weighs 62 gr. The older M is 55gr and was designed to be shot in a twist for stabilization.
Many people will compromise with a twist to fire both rounds. If the M is fired init will not be stablized sufficiently and you will begin to get keyhole groups as RouteClearence mentioned. The SS bullet has a cone shaped penetrator in the nose made of tungsten with a lead core behind the penetrator. Tungsten is a relatively light weight metal and on it's own, doesn't have the kinetic energy to penetrate armor, so the lead core give the kinetic energy that the tungsten penetrator needs to cut through armor.
Because the bullet is an "armor piercing" round, people expect magic qualities from it and become dismayed when the round can't perform to 7. If you realize that the bullet is a. I shoot M in my A2's and M in my A1's. The stuff does exactly what it was designed to do. Brokor likes this.

Well MILD steel core is legal as it doesn't count as "armor peircing". You can buy Bulgarian light ball which has a mild steel core. That being said you can get your hands on steel core chinese 7. This is wrong. This only applies to pistol ammo or whatever the ATF decides is pistol ammo. Big difference. The steel core is a mild steel that is used as a filler to give the bullet a longer bearing surface by reducing the weight that would have been the additional lead core.
If the bullet was filled with all lead it would be over the weight desired for the load OR the projectile would be shorter making it less stable in flight.
Also lead is a more costly metal to use than the cheap mild steel that China is producing. You can buy thin tungsten rods like I have off of McMaster-Carr, cut the rod to bullet length, push rod into bullet seating it in place with glue or Loctite, and testing it on some steel plate. I have done this with some hand-loaded, hot 9mm charges with impressive results. Can Tungsten Projectiles defeat Level IV Body Armor? M995, M948 SLAP, AP4
Yes, I believe you can get the stuff, at least MilSurp. I've found armor-piercing rounds in 8mm Mauser before, but I remember it all being old German stock or Yugoslavian surplus. Google will answer your question. Also, you probably won't be able to shoot that stuff at many ranges for obvious reasons.
It would also be useless and probably illegal for hunting, not to mention quite dangerous and cruel to the animal. It also depends on the range. I bought a thousand round of steel cored 's way back when.
I can't use it at the local range, because of fire hazard. Steel core ammo was banned from manufacturing for civilians back in for any caliber capable of being used in any pistol. Steel and Tungsten is not legal as far as bullets are concerned. They are however widely used in waterfowl hunting as a non-toxic substitute to the lead shot used in the past. I believe it is on a state by state basis, Here in NJ it is for the most part illegal to poses armor piercing ammo.
I'm currently a NJ resident, but have made some hand-loaded hot 9mm charges that can compete with the best. Answer Save.
